Who we are

General information

The University of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Research Promotion Foundation, and the Programming Office, in their efforts to upgrade the research activity of Cyprus have established the Cyprus Research and Academic Network (CYNET) which aims to create an Internet infrastructure and provide advanced Internet services to research and academic users to support and upgrade research and academic activity in Cyprus. The Internet infrastructure supports the interconnection of CYNET with the European research and academic network GEANT at 10+10 Gbps, and internally the connection at very high speeds and the provision of advanced service technology.

The institutional framework of CYNET

A new independent organization has been established for the management of CYNET, which is managed by a six-member Board of Directors.

CYNET Services and Future Plans

  1. First-generation services that include all the services offered by the ordinary Internet, such as e-mail, hypertext transfer protocol (www), the use of a remote computer system (telnet), and the transfer of files from/to remote computers (FTP).
  2. Second-generation services, including video conferencing, telematics, bandwidth management services (managed bandwidth services). This category contains advanced and experimental services (research internet).
  3. Third-generation services, including virtual reality and real-time services. Examples of the above services include 3D images and high-definition videos, such as x-rays and high definition TV, as well as second-generation services, but without the restrictions imposed by the network due to delays (high bandwidth research internet).

    • Marios Tzapouras, Representative of the Department of Electronic Communications of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Works – Member

The Chief Executive Officer of CYNET is Dr. Konnis Georgios.
